The smell is usually the first sign. If your home gets noticeably mustier the moment the AC starts up, then clears when the system cycles off, there’s mold somewhere inside it. Other things to watch for: dark residue around vent registers, dust building up faster than normal, or allergy and sinus issues that get worse indoors and clear up the moment you step outside.
Santa Ana is harder on HVAC systems than most people expect. The city has a reputation for dry heat, but the marine layer coming off the coast keeps indoor humidity higher than the outside air suggests — particularly in the older stucco homes and multi-unit buildings that make up a lot of the housing here.
